Privacy and Security Training and Resources

Overview: Why the need for training?

OntarioMD (OMD) is committed to training physicians and their staff to facilitate their use of health care technology in an increasingly digital world. OMD understands different practice types and seeks opportunities to help physician practices realize the benefits of technology to address their personal needs and goals.

As health information custodians (HICs) under the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), physicians must keep up-to-date on this privacy legislation and educate themselves and their staff on how to fulfill their obligations to protect personal health information (PHI) on an ongoing basis. OMD has developed privacy and security training and resources to meet this ongoing need. The training (with trackable attestation) is available to anyone working in the health care sector - Ontario physicians, other clinicians, and their delegates.

Privacy & Security Training Modules

The OMD Privacy & Security Training Module for the Health Care Sector covers topics such as safeguarding PHI from breaches and security incidents, how to comply with obligations under PHIPA and many other privacy and security concepts. It also includes original cybersecurity content and scenarios informed by real-world clinician experiences. The content is designed to be relevant to all clinicians working anywhere in the Ontario health care sector and should be taken annually to fulfill annual training requirements, keep up with the latest leading practices, and stay informed about contemporary cyberthreats.

For community-based clinicians, the completion of this module is required to access provincial digital health assets, such as Health Report Manager (HRM®) and the Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS).

The OMD Virtual Care Privacy & Security Training Module provides comprehensive privacy and security training for primary care clinicians to deliver virtual care. It covers compliance with PHIPA and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), consent requirements and privacy policies in the context of virtual care.

We encourage users to complete both modules to receive a completion certificate for each one. The modules have been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada's (CFPC) Ontario Chapter for 2 Continuing Medical Education (CME) Mainpro+ credits for each module. Family physicians can claim the credits on the CFPC website. Specialists can also claim CME credit(s) under the Royal College Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program as a Section 2: Personal Learning Project for 2 credits/hour for each module. To claim the credit(s), specialists must record the activity in their MAINPORT ePortfolio on the Royal College's website and complete at least one learning outcome.
