Proof of Concepts
OntarioMD (OMD) works with EMR vendors, clinicians and other partner organizations on Proof of Concepts to define and evaluate emerging EMR functional and EHR integration requirements. The outcomes from these Proof of Concepts inform future EMR Specifications to be published by OMD.
OMD recognizes that EMR vendor innovation is an essential component to Proof of Concept development, and values its partnership with the EMR vendor community. All EMR vendors with
OMD-certified EMR offerings will be selected to participate in Proof of Concepts through an invitational Request for Service (RFS) process. OMD also values participation of its practicing physician community to provide first-hand insight, experience and guidance in demonstrating the clinical and practice value of its Proof of Concepts. Practicing physician members from the community are selected to participate at various stages throughout the lifecycle of the Proof of Concepts. Their selection varies and can leverage physician representatives from the community (family physicians and specialists), members of the OMD
Peer Leader Program, and/or physicians who are clients of the participating EMR vendors.
EMR Integration with the Digital Health Drug Repository (DHDR) is Now Live!!
Clinicians are tasked with juggling a high number of patient interactions and practice priorities in a limited amount of time. That's why OMD is focused on integrating as many clinically valuable practice tools into primary care providers' EMRs as possible. In 2019, we began a partnership with the Ministry of Health, eHealth Ontario (now Ontario Health-Digital Services) and OMD-certified EMR vendors to integrate EMRs with the Digital Health Drug Repository (DHDR).
The DHDR is a provincial resource that offers valuable real-time access to dispensed drug information. DHDR data improves patient care by allowing authorized clinicians secure electronic access to:
- Dispensed drugs covered under the Ontario Drug Benefits (ODB) program
- Dispensed Narcotics recorded in the provincial Narcotics Management System (NMS)
- COVID-19 vaccinations
Through their EMR, clinicians are able to seamlessly view DHDR data for the currently open patient record. There is no need to launch a separate application or browser window and search for the patient. The EMR also leverages your ONE® ID credentials so there is no need to repeatedly enter separate credentials (apart from an initial logon). This seamless access will provide more time for diagnosing, treating and communicating with patients and improve patient outcomes by decreasing the risk of adverse drug events such as medication errors, drug reactions, allergic reactions, and overdoses.
The First DHDR Integration with an OMD Certified EMR is Live!
On May 18, 2021, YMS Inc successfully deployed DHDR to a clinician practice using YMS EMR. This is the first user to go-live in the province with EMR Integrated access to DHDR thanks to the collective efforts of OMD, Ontario Health, the Ministry of Health, and YMS Inc.
We are currently in the final stages of our Limited Production Release, with three EMR Vendors:
- WELL EMR Group (OSCAR Pro)
- QHR Technologies Inc. (Accuro® EMR)
- YMS Inc. (YMS EMR)
Other vendors have formally engaged OMD to start their development to this important provincial resource.

The work being done to integrate the DHDR will enable clinicians to use their EMR to:
- View all dispensed, monitored drugs for narcotics and controlled substances, including opioids
- View publicly-funded drugs dispensed in Ontario for those paid for by the ODB program
